Somebody loaded about 40 all at once after a re-install and this happened, and the solution was to uninstall one by one until it was fixed. If you click on it a list will appear. I don't know how or why my search companion went down, but the first solution in the knowledgebase article you mentioned fixed the problem. There are some known issues with trying to install a search engine in Windows XP, so you really need to check that the software you download is compatible. I have "fixed" the registry as per microsoft, which doesn't work.
Are you sure you are not infected with a virus? The problem is the SEARCH function is simply not operating and with eveything I have tried, nothing is even remotely close to why its happening. Select your broken Windows XP installation and press R to repair Windows XP. 8. Windows XP issues 'A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found' error?

There used to be a program called Reroute XP Search, which could be used to change the search link from the Windows XP search engine to the third party installation, however The manufacturer will send me one for a price. Second's the COM security launch tab. Locate the srchasst.inf file.

I was about to re-load Windows but thought I'd Google 1 more time. In the end the fix was quick and easy. It restores missing or damaged files in Windows.
