I have a Dell monitor attached as a secondary monitor, and I am attempting to share the desktop across both monitors. Click on the "Settings" tab. I took the new monitor out, put the old monitor back on, and still have the problem. You may have graphics card incapable of switching the primary and secondary monitor (for instance in laptops) or your graphics driver may have an alternate method (see the ATI method below It does cause a few issues in that some error messages and such will only appear on the primary screen, but it's not that big of a deal really. Windows 7 insists on identifying the receiver/projector as monitor #1 and my main LCD as #2.
I have a second LCD connected and it is detected as monitor #2. One other problem I had was with the backgrounds--I wanted a different one for each screen and couldn't find a way to do that. However, if I have the projector turned off and the receiver still turned on, the machine insists on making the LCD the secondary monitor. so simple!

by R. But alas, I cannot in all my screwing around figure out a way to get it to do that. Works fine, btw my monitor is the secundary and my tv is the primary. instead i just use the workaround drjimmy11 suggested, and dragged my start bar to where i wanted it.
I've got the single most frustrating situation involving this problem. Once reported, our moderators will be notified and the post will be reviewed. Newer monitor Asus VS228 21.5" LED. At least I think so.
