I can see the drive in the Disk Management. useful reference format -> so you can assign a letter to the hard disk, and a name ecc.. -> IT'S OK (I have then unplugged and plugged again ecc..) -> it works!!
You need the latest driver for it to work. Could explain me as a layman.. I changed the cable and followed your instructions on another computer and I managed to get into the WD drive and copy the files. I've got a bricked seagate too.

The same with every thumb drive I try. Then Iremembered having the same sort of problem on a Red Hat system with a flashdrive. The light on the HDD is flashing blue, but I am not able to see it. I had to assign a Letter to the drive.
When I plugged it in for reinstall, it's now working on my devices. I was very reluctant to upgrade to win 7, but when i did, i didn`t regret it at all. All the best.
