I try doing what you suggested above, but nothing worked. I will order a new cable just in case...but this enabled me to get a CURRENT time machine back up. Let's move on. At this point I'd have to try the drive in a new enclosure or in a desktop so I know there is no power issue.Some owners will not try a new see this here

If you connect it to a Windows machine it probably won't show up because Windows doesn't natively read HFS+ drives (Mac OS Extended, Journaled). You can't have 2 drives assigned as D: (even if ones a DVD and one is a HDD).

When booting from the install disc or repair mode, the only drive recognized is the optical drive.
