Apple must've hijacked the designers of Windoze 8 or kidnapped kindergartners. This means when I try to send / reply an email from Exchange mail box, it defaults to Gmail as the sender. I discovered that - for whatever reason - they were not all the same. If I default back to the Cox.net server, I can send and receive from Gmail but at some point Cox will shutdown my ability to continue using their server. This is usually in the support section of their website; searching for "mail settings" or "SMTP" will usually find it.

Because it has attracted low-quality or spam answers that had to be removed, posting an answer now requires 10 reputation on this site (the association bonus does not count). It helped and I could send messages so be careful while entering gmail login in ‘Advanced’ tab at the Edit SMTP Server List screen.

Stuff like System Prefs, Terminal… Un-flippin-believable. When I use the pull down list, I can select and save the exchange option, however when I come back into these settings for Exchange, it still shows "None". Second, disabling secure authentication is not a fix! I just sent emails from my iphone instead.

Mailbox keeps asking for my password and does not accept it even though I know it is correct. Make sure it has your email spelled correct and password correct, make sure authentication is set to "password" then make sure you use SSL and use port 465 or 587. I'm back on Mail and am feeling quite good. But Google!
Settings are all correct, but mail won't send emails. ISP says it is my computer. For this I created another, dummy gmail account for sending these messages. Weirdness was that the configuration was problem free for months after upgrades from Mountain Lion, Mavericks and finally Yosemite. Check that your Thunderbird settings match the documented settings.
