In Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Server Settings, set the outgoing mail server for your .mac account to whatever your ISPs outgoing mail server is. Resolution was to generate a new app specific password for Mail on Mac and added it back to the Outgoing server settings. what a joke!!!! Had a weird problem where it was asking for an SMTP password for an account that was long since completely deleted from Mail.
