I would go back to a Windoze machine but they are worse. In your Mail, click on Mail and select Preferences. After doing many changes quickly without any results, I set the thing up as I thought it should work, and got into a conference. Check your Incoming Server setting to make sure it says imap.gmail.comand not pop.gmail.com.

Crazy. It is the same as to System Preferences / Internet Accounts. (Not to be confused with Mail / Preferences / Accounts).
