The solution that worked for me was to simply remove the "offending" server name from the SMTP server list and re-add it. Not sure if what you want is possible? It does not happens with iCloud, but most of my e-mail must go through verizon's accounts. My mail appears to be sending, however, when I checked my sent mail it also shows I have 61 emails in my outbox.
