Resolution was to generate a new app specific password for Mail on Mac and added it back to the Outgoing server settings.

I opened my email and the first thing I saw was a notification from Google saying that they had blocked a sign-in to my gmail account. Fill in your email account and password.

HELP! So you basically have to enter the outgoing server name twice under description and server name. Any work arounds? useful reference I understand you are experiencing issues with Mail in Mavericks.
Let us know in the comments. I'd removed all traces from the Keychain, SMTP server etc. I checked all the credentials, re-entered them and even changed that "false" into "true", still nothing happened.

Weirdness was that the configuration was problem free for months after upgrades from Mountain Lion, Mavericks and finally Yosemite. Its a workaround at best, and an insecure one.
