I used "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them". The solution Michal wrote didn’t work. Would you like to answer one of these unanswered questions instead? Although, full disclosure, I have never checked Windows Update History to see if it still knew what updates were installed and when. More hints

In the Windows folder, look for AppRepository folder. It will work normally. But what if you're not comfortable with both of these ways. You should be running the show there now!
The deletion of the folder wasn’t enought… you had to reboot… i found this out the hard way. As transactions are committed, the checkpoint moves forward in the Edb.chk file. and then failed. Stop the service, delete the entire folder, start the service and the folder is recreated.
