The whole point of routing is that the routers know how to reach the other networks, even if they aren't attached to the networks. If the learned route falls over (local internet down) then the floating static (lower priority than the learned route) will kick in. It will not let me ping anything past the default gateway, and the laptop cannot connect to any websites. Issue the command: show ip arp It should show any public IP addresses you've tried to access as incomplete.
