I changed the security back to WPA and hey presto, all PCs could talk to each other again.

I added my laptops specific address 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4, then they were able to ping eachother and the router could ping the laptops. several services were in manual and workstation was disabled on both computers everything is working just fine. But that's way down the possibility list.
