Why Microsoft never prompt any message to alert user that it requires a default database?? If so, how to download it and wherefrom to connect it. But it does sound a lot like what you're experiencing.

Anyway, my problem was that once I logged in via mgmt studio, set to master, I couldn't do anything. If you double click the user (Expand Security -> Logins) you would end up seeing no database being assigned to Default Database as shown in the snippet below. You saved my day.
